As a philosophy, dada is about as useful as anarchy.

But as a springboard for artistic concepts, it's the greatest thing ever!

Recoil

A long time ago I would have grabbed this oppurtunity without hesitation
brashness and ego, guiding my every move, would push, heave and thrust me in this direction
with all the force that an abstract concept can conjure
observe how wisdom has weakened me!

Hidden in this newfound wisdom is the curse's greatest blessing:
freedom
and, as the wise and wary know, freedom is free of the desire for freedom
push me backwards towards a world of happy slaves
and I'll pull you along with me
and maybe, just maybe, the fall will kill us

(Title)

They stole the love from our hearts to use as fuel for the flagship
took the kerosene from our lanterns to pour down the throats of enemy dragons
ripped out our hair to tie their nooses
used our bones to fashion their swords
and they built their cathedral from the ground we'd be walking on if we weren't falling through this gap in the earth

Stop
Fast forward
Play

Welcome to Post-modernia, population: fuck all

Headphones in place of dunce caps, litter the streets
the guillotine verses the paperweight
revolution 2.0; now battery operated and ribbed for her pleasure
copywrite the unwriten law, lest the enemies of Mr. Faceless write it first

Progress will destroy us

Saving demons from damsels

Come to this night, with your cane and pistol by your side
shrouded in the shade, benighted by the fright of righteous sorrow
beneath the cloak and behind the dagger
it's all still flesh and blood
no matter what you do to preserve it
someday it all will be gone

This morning I woke up in a ditch with your head on my chest
your body was nowhere to be found
tonight I'm dancing with or without you, love
a broom or a shotgun could make an easy partner
and I'll never know the difference

Piss on indescretion, the inquisition is over
and I've lost just enough inhibition to tell you what I call you when you're not around
turn away and fade in time, inflict yourself on some other poor soul
and don't forget your blood on the way out

Green-yellow Blues

Wings of paper are easily burnt
how such a simple thing can be so hard to remember is beyond me
how many times now?
how many times have we set ourselves up for an easily avoidable downfall?
and yet, it seems so important to fail

When the day finally comes
and we realize the brilliance of our mistakes
will we be smart enough to see where we could have suceeded?
will we be able to burn away the excess and feed the belly so the soul may grow?
or will we, yet again, only create more disastors in the name of progress?

Tell me, does a firefly die when it rains?

Dreaming without a net

This fever will never break
but every now and then it lets up just enough to instill hope
and then the crushing blow all over again

Can a man die from pain alone?

When the delirium sets in I can almost believe you're not a factory tailored product
almost
but in the end you're made of made of the same bricks as the shadows in my alley

And when my eyes roll back and I can't see
I'll let myself think you're smiling then
while I'm bound and gagged inside my head, it helps to think someone somewhere is happy
and I'll grit my teeth and pretend it's a smile
just to encourage you to smile on

Lately it feels like I'm a burden
like all my old habits are suddenly bad ones
like it's a sin to love everyone
like I'm dieing

I don't want you here when I sink down
when I go back to the nothing I came from
but when the flies come to keep me company and my body starts to sink
I think I'd like for you to drop by at some point then

I imagine you'd be almost pleasant if I weren't alive

Thanks dude.
I've got a few of those songs in the can right now, and I'm going to be cutting a live demo on friday. In the next few weeks I should be able to get some of my noise up here for you.

Hell, when I get the money I can hire a band. Playing guitar and kazoo at the same time is damn complicated.

Sawdust

I've lately taken up the art of carpentry
luthery to be specific, the art of making stringed instruments
it's captivating work
especially if you're like me and you do everything by hand

Working with wood is a truly awe inspiring and evocative experience
similar in many ways to listening to a good eleven minute blues boogie
...you just get lost in it
an hour, two hours, all goddamn day
it still always seems like you're just getting started
the only thing marking the passage of time is the ache in your joints after the first hour

I'll often put on an old Charlie Christian or Elmore James album while I work
letting the saw move to the beat of the music helps the time pass more quickly
and of course, you have to have patience
wood doesn't enjoy being pushed around
you need to work with it, and not against it
let the wood tell you where to go, and not vice versa

The experience is humbling and ego enhancing at the same time
seeing the absolute messes you make and comparing it to the grandiose constructions of ancient others
things you once thought werent all that impressive...
all of a sudden they are absolute brilliance
and getting lost in the wood is better than any music out there

The other day my friend came by my house
walked in the cellar door unanounced as usual
after the usual "hey"s and "hello"s and "fuck yous" he looks at the dobro I'd been working on for the past week
examines it closely
inspects every inch carefully
"what'cha making here, brother?" he asks

I looked down at my unfinished project, which I've already gathered a lot of pride in
looked back up at him...

"Sawdust," I said.
"I'm making sawdust."

(Insert art here)

Tonight I'll take the pillow out from underneath my head
let the hardwood floor keep me cool
and see if, for once, the sickness doesn't set in
after so many nights of agony on a comfortable bed
maybe some warped and adled solid and splintering planks will keep me well

It's been a while since I've been in any position to say it
but I'm happy to be here
I'm happy to be sunk in a pool of piss and vomit
I'm happy to be lost in hour long bursts of mind pain
after all, the only thing worse than agony is mild discomfort
or, worse yet, complacency

Just last night I saw a blood stain that looked like an old friend
theres a metaphor in there somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it
fuck it

Just between me and you...
the spaces between the words are more important to me than anything else
that's not a metaphor, it's the truth
I just like the way the paper looks shining out from behind my mindless scrawlings

You know what?
Go fuck yourself.
