Thinking Positively
We all seem to think of things from the past as causing us to think negatively. Try this.
Whenever I read a message like yours, I immediately find myself wishing that everyone could have a happy, loving and carefree childhood, as early childhood experiences can color your perception of the world. Unfortunately, as your email so painfully reminds us, that just isn’t the real world. I am, however, very pleased to tell you that this perception need not be a life sentence, and changing the color of your world is absolutely possible.
Technically, changing the color of your world (your subconscious thoughts) is called cognitive restructuring. The goal here is to help you overcome flawed and negative thinking by first identifying and addressing the source, and then reprogramming those thoughts. In short, cognitive restructuring is used to identify and alter negative, irrational thinking patterns and then replace them with more positive and rational thoughts. Albert Ellis’s rational emotive therapy (RET) is a great example of a cognitive approach to therapy using cognitive restructuring. It is intended to change the color of your world and teach you how you can begin seeing that glass as half full!
