How to prevent depression
Ok, this is kinda a out-there question, but what if you know your in a situation where you could be depressed if things keep going the way they are, and you want to prevent the inevitable, Is it possible, to um...oh how do I say this, prevent depression that you know is going to hit..hmm...well that's the best I can explain it.

That is pretty vague, so it is hard to give a prevention strategy. Although here is why I do. Your brain is controllable, but it isn't easy to control so it requires a lot of work. Control what your mind thinks about. For example, if you just broke up with your sweetheart, the best thing to do is get your mind away from your sweetheart and do something else. It is like if your arm hurts every time you reach to the sky, what do you do? You stop reaching for the sky. If you know it is going to hurt, don't do it. If you think you are entering in a situation that could produce depression, avoid it.

There is also a difference between, temporary sadness and depression.
I think that if your trying to avoid depression, you need to get out all the feelings that are going to make you depressed, i can say that avoiding dealing with them does help, i do it, but its a bad thing.
I think that you need some one there that you can rely on to support you when its needed, preventing something like depression can be done, but yes its very hard and you have to know exactly what your battling against.

to avoid depression isnt easy.
why do you think it is going to hit?
i think to even try to avoid depression you need to open up and talk about the problem. cos if you bottle it up it will only be worst.
it's been 6 hours since i posted this and well i've been thinking. (shock horror.... no it didn't hurt)
there is no way to prevent depression if you have it. but you can deal with the problems. You just have to face the problem and realise there is one. to find someone who you trust enough to spil your guts out to. it doesn't really matter who it is, someone you've never met millions of miles away your best friend or a doctor. you just need to talk let the emotions out.
it's taken me 21 yrs to understand this.
sadness last a few hours a day sometimes a week. depression last months years.

i agree with jess, you need to talk about what's happening, keeping everything bottled up will only make things worse.it's hard but dealing with deprssion will be much harder.i hope you do tell someone about whatever is making you feel this way.whether it's here or somewhere else, let someone know.
hope it all works out you.x

i can sometimes see it coming a mile off and thats just from the way i feel or behave. but thats cause im getting used to bipolar disorder now (which is nice)
but yeah, you cant really prevent it from coming on, as it has to happen and you cant stop things from hurting you. BUT, you can prepare for it, and make the impact you get a lot smaller. make sure you have things to do, or are seeing people and just make sure you arent on your own doing nothing...as that is the perfect situation to have a really shit time.

just don't dwell on it. if you dwell on it, it will be 10 times worse then it actually is.
if you think you are fall learn how to catch yourself enough to not hit rock bottom. after awhile you learn what you can do to deal and learn to live with depression.
hang in there and if you need to talk we're all here.
